Finally, some progress!!! I have spent quite a bit of time mulling over the details of Baby C’s Nursery and I’ve finally nailed down some of the main items for the room. I’m really happy with what we have so far and can’t wait to share everything with you!
Once we had decided on a color scheme for the room, it was time to start space planning and identifying the large items that we needed for the space. I then created a furniture checklist to help guide our budget and purchasing timeline. The most expensive items on the list that we wanted to look for first were the crib, rocker, and chandelier.
Even though the room is inspired by flamingos, I didn’t want the room to be shouting a theme at you when you walk in. I decided to go with a pretty watercolor giclée print from a talented Society6 artist to bring in some flamingo flare. The print pulls in the right shades of pink/coral I was looking for and will look so sweet in a lovely white frame. I actually found the crib by accident while shopping for a friend’s baby shower at BuyBuy Baby. The Ava Convertible Crib is by Bassetbaby and comes in white or this pretty dove gray. The crib was moderately priced but you can sign up for cupons on the BuyBuy Baby website.
The Nurseryworks Empire Rocker we purchased is probably my favorite furniture item in the room. It is a little pricey at $800 but I’ve had my eye on the baby & kids sections of my favorite flash sale sites and ended up scoring it from Gilt for $585. The fabric is a comfy micro-sued and the seat is wide enough for mommy, baby and my chihuahua to lounge in. The chair could definitely use a good lumbar pillow but the wings will make for a great little head rest for all those late night feeding sessions. The pouf I found was a quick impulse buy from Joss & Main during one of their floor pillow sales.
Choosing the right light fixture was towards the top of my priority list. I wanted something substantial but didn’t really want to go the girly crystal chandelier route. I ended up finding this fabulous art deco inspired semi-flush pendant from Lamps Plus. The combination of brass and frosted glass is just heavenly. We picked up the fixture last weekend and decided to try installing it ourselves. After about four rounds of playing musical wire connections, we had ourselves a bright little star bringing plenty of light to the nursery. So much light in fact, we will have to switch it to a dimmer so it’s more functional. Eventually…
Isn’t it just gorgeous??? Its medium size is the perfect scale for the room and will be a fun shiny object for Baby C to look up at. Since much of our budget is allocated for fabric and furniture for the nursery, accessories will have to be bargin buys. I’ve already found some cute matte white candle holders and hanging planters from Ikea. I plan on buying a few xerographica air plants from Bird and Feather to put in the vases. While I was at Ikea, I also picked up a super cozy mohair throw for $29.99.
I promised myself that when I moved into my new house, I would boycott Ikea furniture. But when you’re on a budget and you still need some big ticket items, their prices are just so hard to beat. While on the hunt for some smaller items, I found a dresser that I thought would make a great changing table. My justification in purchasing the dresser was that I planned to “hack” it and pretty it up a little bit with some new paint and some gold hardware. I’m still on the lookout for a dresser for her closet and a bookshelf but I am pretty happy with the progress we’ve made in the last few weeks!
