My husband and I have always enjoyed watching movies outside. Actually, one of our first dates was at a drive-in movie in San Luis Obispo. When we moved to San Diego we were quite disappointed to learn there is only one drive-in theater down here. To feed our need for movie viewing under the stars, we went searching for a suitable alternative. We ended up finding a great deal on a projector and a 72″ inflatable screen. Once we tested everything out we invited over a few friends for some pizza and a movie.
Our sprinkler system has been on the fritz for a while so all our grass ended up dying this summer. Not a pretty sight. I laid out a large canvas drop cloth so everyone who sat on the ground wouldn’t get dirty. I swiped my lightweight side table and lamp from inside to add some homeyness to the yard. For subtle ambiance, I picked up a couple of cheap lanterns at Target. The candles provided the perfect amount of light without compromising visibility of the screen. Adding colorful pillows and bright floral arrangements helped liven up the space.
Once we started watching the movie I realized the lamp was too bright so it was more for looks than anything. While setting everything up I experimented with a few other variations, like this one below.
With summer coming to an end, we plan on having one last movie night Labor Day weekend. If you’ve never thought of purchasing a projector, I encourage you to check it out. You can find a pretty good quality projector for around $200. You don’t need to buy a screen either, a sheet hanging from a fence would work too. Happy viewing!
